โMargaret Drabbleโs The Ice Age, an overt โcondition of Englandโ novel, described the nation as โsliding, sinking, shabby, dirty, lazy, inefficient, dangerous, in its death throes, worn out, clapped out, occasionally lashing outโ. Keith Miller, in an excellent account of Jakeโs Thing, accompanies this quotation with comparable quotations from John Fowlesโs Daniel Martin (1977) and William Goldingโs Darkness Visible (1979).
